St Lucia Estuary Mouth 6 July 2023

St Lucia Estuary Mouth
The Mouth opened again on 14 April 2022. Various rumours has it that it was breached by humans with spades on Spring high tide at midnight.

More than a year later the mouth pivoted to the North. Sand bar growing from the South is very visible. This is probably due to winter conditions.

We are currently experiencing country wide snow and rain. This will bring water from the catchment areas down and hopefully we have one more year of Estuarine function.

Without a sediment management plan this could lead to ocean born sediment washing into the system.

Sunset Jetty Residents

These two feather folk have been residing at Sunset Jetty since pre Lockdown.

They are almost hand tame. Very inquisitive. Wonder if the locals has named them yet?

Pardette and myself do daily videos about our excursions. Either in St Lucia, Richards Bay or the Bush. These videos are loaded onto YouTube for all to view.

St Lucia Estuary - The First 21 km

The First 21km
Is the natural connection between the Lake and The Ocean. It's here where the magic happens. Where breath is spawned and life is created.

This 21 km Winding Channel was the home to thousands of Mangrove Trees. Their air roots was a safe haven to many species of Marine Critters that was part of the bigger food chain. The roots also acting as nurseries to small fish and crabs. Like the highly endangered Fidler Crab that once was a major tourist attraction.

The Mangrove Roots also acted as a sediment trap during tidal changes and the Hippos moving onto the land at night created tidal pools and channels as they moved through the Mangroves to emerge for
day or night time feeding excursions.

During Rough Ocean and Windy Tidal Surges a White or Light Brown Foamy Froth was whipped up amongst these roots. This was the birth of Phytoplankton that was swept out to populate the ocean during Tidal Changes.

Phytoplankton is the only organisms on The Planet that has the ability to balance CO2 and O2 purely because of its vast bio mass. This Breathing biomass of single cell organisms contribute to the delicate balance of The Earth's ability to sustain life.

This is Part of Series of Entries that will become part of a Video on Our YouTube Channel.

Finding Yourself - St Lucia Sunset

St Lucia Estuary
Sun Set
22 June 2021

How do you keep focus?

The one thing I learnt is to stop worrying what people think about you and trying to access what your direction is. #JustDoIt.

Sometimes you just have to say. WTH.. and keep doing what you believe in.

The first people who will start following you will be close friends and family. They will also be your greatest critics.

The next will be mostly your haters or like they would love to see themselves as your mentors. Trust me.. your mentors won't appear until much later. They will pop up in the strangest places and will have the most valuable contribution to your message.

Soft Spoken People. Absolutely caring and soft spoken.

It is at this point that the haters becomes jealous and Strat their manipulation. Gross unadulterated manipulation. When you cut them off they get insulating.. misleading and obnoxious.

The first insult will come via spelling and grammar Ninja.. then the keyboard Ninja stage will follow.

The best way to deal with them is to ignore them. This will literally make their heads explode and most likely they will take it out on friends and family around them. What better way to get to someone than through their own actions.

Well I am currently in the stage where I am under full attack of cyber bullies turned criminals.

At this point I sit back and relax .. looking at how they destroy themselves from within.

As a "Shycopath" there is no better or more exhilarating feeling. Now you don't have to hurt people to get your kicks out of life. They are now in automated selfharm mode.. all you now need to do is sit back and enjoy the show.

Popcorn Anyone?

After many years of extreme management plan to seperate the ocean and the Estuary the Estuary Mouth was eventually opened on 4 January 2021.

To some a controversial decision, but to many a welcome breath. Local Harvesting Rights has been impacted as a move to build fresh water reserves was pushed to the extremes by previous management.

The New management Team are way more focused on Increasing Bio Diversity using Nature to attract all segments of Tourism and open the Park and it's amenities to various user groups as prescribed under UNESCO's Heritage Act.

It's believed that the World Heritage Act in South Africa has been manipulated on Parliamentary Level to only benefit the previlaged few that can afford high end accommodation and expensive tours.

With the current Wet Cycle we hope that this opertunity will be used to open the iSimangaliso Wetlands Park as an affordable destination for all South Africans and user groups they represent.

Here is a Gentleman that uses very basic angling techniques to proof it was in Nature's Best Interest to open the Estuary Mouth so mother Nature can Breath again.

One Little Bit Of Improvement at a time

Growing The St Lucia Experience YouTube channel one little improvement at a time.

Outsourcing the YouTube Graphics. Bringing a little bit of class to a work in progress.

Setting the End Cards while on the run was also difficult. Getting the SEO done as we go and grow will be the next small adjustment to make a great difference.

Now some more time will be allocated to an extra Video per day focusing more on detailed analysis on how to explain the problems.

Maybe this little bit of  reliever will dampen my abrasive personality towards stupid.

I am humbled by the effort of everyone involved. Thank You.

Revisiting The 1942 Development Plan

Aquafarming The St Lucia System

The iMfolozi Flood Plains

 #Religion101

The Umfolozi flood plains were reclaimed and sold to the public in 1928 to fund the British Soldiers coming back from WWI..
But that is irrelevant.. In 1718 Sedimentation build up in the St Lucia basin was identified as a reason why the Royal British Navy did not see St Lucia Estuary fit to develop as a harbour..
You see school Geography teaches us Natural Erosion.. this is where rainfall on the mountain and it slides down into the valley to create fertile farmland.. anyway..
St Lucia couldn't function naturally anymore back in 1718
Since God gave dominion over Nature to man more than 8000 years ago.. about 2000 before the Glacier that covered this area melted.. it is only fitting to continue with 1942 Development plan of turning The St Lucia Basin into the biggest man-made Marine Aquaculture in the history of mankind.
If not .. the system will choke to death.. a natural course that these systems undergo.. and become farmland..
My take on this.. a Marine system is much more important than more crops.. cheaper to develop and much more productive in green protein than any other commercial farming operation..
As a freshwater system, it has a limited life span and very little use..
As a marine system, it populates the Tugela Shelve, the sandbank running from South of Durban to Mapelane Bay just South of St Lucia Estuary.
As a marine system, it is a Nursery to 50% of all the marine species of South Africa.
As a Phytoplankton Production Facility, it keeps the only organism alive that mitigate global warming every 48 hours
We cannot turn our back on managing The St Lucia basin as a Marine System and we don't need the Umfolozi flood plain to do it.
It was already silted up in 1718.

The Death of an Ecosystem - 10 Aug 2015

St Lucia Estuary

Many moons ago, stuttering, dyslexic Petrus started with his lone campaign. At this time I already lost my children's inheritance twice in the fight for a Managed Marine Functioning System. In this very poor quality video, I tried my little heart out with substandard equipment telling the story of a dying system and a failing World Heritage Site. Today I watch this and think back.. all the criticism, not only because of the poor quality videos, but also the negative publicity it brought to the community.

No one wanted to visit a dying system, but I was adamant that no publicity was bad publicity. We had to turn this decay around. I will never know if it was my continuous winning that irritated people enough to pick up the struggle or was it Covid19, but somehow everything came together and today we can look back and smile, laugh or sympathise with me..

Covid19 - Level 2 Lock down - Why Visit St Lucia Estuary

 St Lucia Estuary

iSimagaliso Wetlands Park

KwaZulu-Natal

South Africa

The place where Splendor is born every day is on the East Coast of Africa. The place where Heaven meets Earth is at an Estuary Mouth. It's True that St Lucia Estuary hasn't been connected to the ocean since 2007, but it doesn't mean we cannot enjoy sitting on a dune watching whales frolicking or skinks and snakes slithering across the road.

We have 2 Diverse Ecosystems that can be accessed by road from St Lucia Estuary, the slumbering little town, The Dry Woodland Western Shores, or The Wetlands on the Eastern Shores of Lake St Lucia. Both venues offer great Birding, Game Viewing, and Walking Trails.

Birding along St Lucia Estuary Mouth

Yes unfortunately to embark on the walking excursions you need to be somewhat walking fit. About 40 minutes will get you to excellent spots but if you can walk twice that much you might experience the serenity of being totally basked in splendor.

Amongst The various trails, there is The Southern Beach Walk, The Northern Beach Walk, and all the other little trails that coincide with all these nature revealing walks.
