St Lucia Estuary - Spawning Varuna litterata (Indo Pacific Paddling Crabs)

 iSimangaliso Wetlands Park

South Africa

St Lucia Estuary Mouth Recently breached

Did the Normal St Lucia Experience beach walk and this little critters caught my eye. Went down closer to the water's edge and saw little glassy insect-like critters scattering for the water. On closer inspection, I had the rare opportunity to video the birth of Varuna litterata, also known as River swimming crabs or Paddelng Crabs.

Very little is available on the Internet about them. Found some bits and pieces in pdf research documents that suggest they occur in the Indo Pacific Oceans. It's believed they enter freshwater systems up to km up rivers. They congregate to spawn during the Equinox Spring Tides and those females can spawn up to 11 000 eggs. Incubation Period is unclear, but it is well documented that they enter the oceans around April in Large Colonies.

This was one of those life-defining moments where you realise how fortunate we are to experience life's miracles on a daily basis. The other time was when I watched Baby Sea Turtles exited the nest making a wild dash towards the ocean.
